The Great Ocean Road is 243 km long and runs along the Australian south coast between Torquay and Allansford in the state of Victoria. It is considered to be one of the most famous and popular scenic routes for tourists in Australia. I was so impressed!

Typical for the Great Ocean Road are winding road along the rough cliffs and fine sandy beaches that attract surfers as well as many travellers, unique observation decks and the temperate rainforest of the Great Otway National Park with its unspoiled nature. It's best to rent a car and drive yourself for maximum enjoyment and flexibility. Alternatively, you can also book guided tours from Melbourne.

MUST DO: Visit the 12 Apostles

The 12 Apostles are up to sixty-meter high rocks made of limestone. They are undoubtedly the most famous tourist attraction of this route and simply fascinating. The 12 Apostles in Australia originally consisted of 9 limestone columns. In 2005, however, one of the pillars collapsed which is why there are only eight left. It's also clear that the remaining apostles will not stand there for ever. Because of wind and sea erosion that originally created the calcareous pillars, the columns will one day disappear. Therefore, go to Australia and admire the 12 Apostles while they are still there.

INSIDER TIP: Discover the Great Ocean Walk

Travellers should not only just race down the B100, but should instead take their time and enjoy the spectacular views of the coast and the hinterland. For those with extra time to spare, I suggest leaving the car behind for a day and walk the Great Ocean Walk. My favourite section starts at Johanna Beach, a wide, two-kilometer-long beach that is often empty of people. Walking along the Great Ocean Walk gives you the feeling that you own the coast alone. Moreover, keep your eyes open - we met thousands of kangaroos, koalas and parrots in the wild. Definitely a great experience!
