About 1.5 hours north of Perth is the small coastal town of Lancelin. In this area, snow-white dunes rise from the green bushland. It is just a giant sandpit for adults ;-) Locals ride 4x4 vehicles, quads and motorcycles through the most massive dunes in Western Australia. But you can also go sandboarding or just walk on the snow-white sand dunes and enjoy the view that extends to the sea. Definitely great fun!
MUST-DO: Visit Pinnacles at Cervantes
Less than an hour north of Lancelin, the Indian Ocean Drive near Cervantes takes you through a desert filled with fascinating stone pillars. The bizarre limestone formations of the Pinnacles are part of the Nambung National Park and have been created by erosion over millions of year. You can discover the pillars on foot, on a small circular walk or on the "loop", which is passable by car. The pinnacles look exceptionally beautiful in the warm light of the late afternoon sun.
Insider Tip: After a nice walk, take a short detour to Hangover Bay where you can go for a swim and have a nice picnic. I was lucky to see some dolphins over there.
Cool!
