The small town of Rainbow Beach is located on the long beaches of Queensland in north-eastern Australia.
Many years ago, the Aborigines believed that depending on the direction of the light the sand dunes shine in all colours of the rainbow - this is where the name of the town comes from. In fact, the unusual colour of the sand is due to its richness of different minerals. There is even a black dune in the north of Rainbow Beach. The other sand dunes around Rainbow Beach seem bright at first glance. Some even seem white - but a total of 40 different shades have been registered. The city is small but very idyllic. What I appreciated is that tourists hadn't spoilt the place. It is definitely a good place to relax and unwind from the busy life of being a traveller ;-)
INSIDER TIP: Go Skydiving at Rainbow Beach. I jumped off at 14,000 feet and had a free-fall for 65 seconds. Once the parachute was open, I enjoyed spectacular views of Fraser Island, the ocean as well as Rainbow Beach before finally landing safely back on the beach - pure adrenaline and an unforgettable life experience!
@Marcel Pielenga: Valid point ;-), but it's definitely a life experience! You should go for it.
I would definitely do it there - the Rainbow Beach looks awesome! You would just need to calm my parents down.
