I didn't know exactly what to expect, except that Kakadu is said to be one of the largest and most beautiful national parks in Australia - indeed -
The national park is approximately 2000km2 large and offers a breathtaking variety of landscapes: from large sandstone plateaus to savanna, wetlands, magnificent waterfalls, countless rivers and tropical rainforest through to the mangrove forests. The park belongs to the Bininj and Mungguy who lovingly look after the land according to traditional customs and traditions as Aboriginal tribes are spiritually bound to this area. For this reason, the park also has one of the most extensive collections of rock art - there is a lot to discover.
If you want to move around in Kakadu National Park, I recommend renting a 4x4 vehicle. It will allow you to move freely and discover even more remote areas, especially during the dry season when all roads are accessible. In the rainy season, some roads can be closed. Please do note, that you will not get far with a standard car because you can only drive on paved roads. Alternatively, if a vehicle is not an option, you can also book a 2-5 day guided tour.
MUST DO: Visit the JIM JIM Falls
The largest waterfalls in Kakadu National Park are the Jim Jim Falls with a drop of about 215 meters. Surrounded by a breathtaking jungle landscape, the waterfalls offer great hiking trails and viewpoints. Especially lovely is the Billabong of the Jim Jim Falls, which is located a small hiking trail far away. Note, however, the time in which you travel. At the end of the rainy season, there is always a lot of water. Many trails in the area are therefore closed, but not the rivers. That's why I explored the landscape by boat and took part in the Billabong Sunrise Tour. We discovered lotus flowers and the so-called Pandanus. We also saw crocodiles and an incredible number of birds, such as Jacanas, Jabiru, Egrets, to name a few. I couldn't get enough of it.
INSIDER TIP: Take a bath in the rock pools and water holes.
One of the best places to swim is Gunlom Falls in the southern part of the park, where you can even climb the waterfall. A little less well known is the Maguk Plunge Pool. In a breathtaking landscape, you can cool off in the pool of the small waterfall and then enjoy the sun on the sandbank on the edge of the lake.
Have you been to Australia? Which National Park can you recommend to me? I'm looking forward to your tip.
Nice it next goal.
