Australia Day is the official national day of Australia, celebrated annually on 26 January across all major cities and it is simply a great event.
Because it is Australia Day today, I am going to tell you a little bit more about this national holiday.
Originally this day marks the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of British ships landing in Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788. It is now a national holiday. Traditionally, a variety of events are held on Australia Day. Many Australians just catch up, have a typical BBQ and enjoy some drinks. However, there are also plenty of beach parties, parades as well as festivals and concerts in many cities.
MUST DO: Watch the stunning fireworks
In every state capital and major city, the day ends with fireworks. The most impressive firework display is in Perth. This is also Australia Day's largest event, where more than a third of Perth's residents gather on the shores of the Swan River and celebrate the National Day.
I've been in Sydney at that time and spent Australia Day over there. During the day I went to the city centre, sauntered through the streets and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the celebrations in Sydney. In the evening I went to Circular Quay, close to Sydney Harbour, where already thousands of people had gathered to watch the spectacular fireworks in front of the backdrop of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. It was just an exuberant atmosphere!
INSIDER TIP: Walk up to the Botanical Garden and head in the direction of Mrs Macquarie's Chair which is part of a public park in Sydney. Take a picnic blanket, some snacks and something to drink with you. From there you can enjoy a spectacular view over the harbour and the fireworks. Usually it starts at 9pm. You should be there at least 1.5 hours before to get a good spot.
